What Should You Pack for the Maternity Ward?

It is best to finish packing for the maternity ward by the 36th week of pregnancy, as labor can begin at any time once the ninth month starts.

1. Medical documents

Keep all documents together in a plastic folder and within easy reach:

  1. 1

    Personal documents

A valid identity card and verified health insurance card.

  2. 2

    Hospital referral

Provided by your gynecologist at the local health center.

  3. 3

    Blood type

The original report showing your blood type and Rh factor.

  4. 4

    Pregnancy records

Your complete pregnancy history, latest blood count and urine test, ultrasound reports, vaginal and cervical swab results, and hepatitis B test.

  5. 5

    Additional documents, if needed

A stool culture if required by the hospital, and cardiology or anesthesiology reports for a planned cesarean section or epidural.

2. Delivery-room bag to bring at admission

  1. 1

    Waterproof slippers

    Rubber shower slippers are essential.

  2. 2

    Cotton and comfort

One nightgown that opens easily at the front, unless the hospital provides one, and socks in case you feel cold.

  3. 3

    Refreshments

A small bottle of still water and lip balm, as lips can dry quickly during breathing exercises.

3. Bag for your stay after delivery

  1. 1

    Postpartum hygiene

Three to four packs of cotton maternity pads and five to six pairs of disposable mesh underwear.

  2. 2

    Bed protection

Five large disposable bed pads, approximately 60 × 90 cm.

  3. 3

    Clothing

Two or three nightgowns that open at the chest for easier breastfeeding, a light robe, and wire-free cotton nursing bras.

  4. 4

    Toiletries

A toothbrush and toothpaste, travel-size shampoo and body wash, hand soap, and a mild deodorant if needed.

  5. 5

    Towels and tissues

One large shower towel, one smaller face towel, a roll of paper towels, and a pack of wet wipes.

  6. 6

    Breast care

Pure lanolin nipple cream that does not need to be washed off before feeding, plus a few nursing pads.

  7. 7

    Food and drink

A pack of plain biscuits or energy bars, as you may become hungry during the night when the kitchen is closed.

4. Items for your baby during the stay

Most public maternity hospitals in Serbia provide baby clothes during the hospital stay, so you usually do not need to pack them in this bag. Bring only basic hygiene items, although the hospital often provides those as well:

  1. 1

    Diapers

The smallest pack of disposable newborn diapers, size 1.

  2. 2

    Skin care

A small tube of diaper rash cream.

  3. 3

    Wipes and cloths

Unscented wet wipes made with 99% water and two or three cotton muslin cloths.

Do not bring the items for leaving the hospital — your baby’s outfit, infant carrier or car seat, and your own clothes — when you first arrive. Pack them separately at home and ask someone to bring them on the day you are discharged.

A tip from experienced mothers: a phone charger with a two-meter cable can be invaluable because hospital outlets are often high on the wall or far from the bed. A hair tie can make breastfeeding more comfortable for both you and your baby. Remember contact-lens supplies if you use them, and leave jewelry and valuables at home.

And remember: leave fear at home and bring faith and hope that everything will go well. A smile is another small detail that can brighten your stay, your baby’s first moments, and the unforgettable photograph of the day you go home together.
